PRESENTATION

1.Overview

The Spatial Design major explores the dynamic relationship between people and space, and focuses on designing environments by integrating the environmental, social, and cultural factors that shape spatial experience.

Since its establishment in 1967 as the Interior and Environmental Design program within the Department of Decorative Arts, the program has evolved through Environmental Design (1998) and Spatial Design (2007), building strong academic and professional foundations while contributing to the development of Korea's spatial culture.

Through education and research grounded in the values of sustainability, the program aims to cultivate future-oriented women leaders capable of critically engaging with and creatively addressing complex contemporary challenges, including environmental crises, demographic shifts, and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technologies.

2.What Our Students Do

Students in the program explore a wide spectrum of spatial practices, including:
Interior Design and Spatial Coordination
Spatial Branding and Service Design
Visual Merchandising (VMD)
Exhibition Design
Urban Regeneration and Public Space Design
Stage Design in Entertainment Environments
Landscape, Furniture, and Lighting Design
Architectural Design
As digital environments expand, students also engage with emerging design fields such as game environment design and spatial design for metaverse platforms.

3. Where Our Graduates Work

Graduates build careers across leading global companies, creative studios, cultural institutions, and public organizations. Alumni work at companies including Amorepacific, IKEA Korea, LG Household & Health Care, Samsung Electronics, Shinsegae Property, Haeahn Architecture, Samsung C&T Everland, Cheil Worldwide, HSAD, Kia, Hanssem, Casamia, Fursys, Bitzro & Partners, CJ ENM, and KBS.

Others contribute to cultural institutions such as the National Museum of Korea and the Seoul Baekje Museum, or work within the Seoul Metropolitan Government and other public agencies. Many alumni also establish independent design studios or pursue academic careers in universities in Korea and abroad.

4. Industry Collaboration

The program maintains strong partnerships with leading corporations and public institutions, including IKEA Korea, Hyundai Motor Company, LG Electronics, Samsung C&T Everland, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, and Korea Power Engineering Company.

Through these collaborations, students participate in real-world design projects and interdisciplinary initiatives. These include STEAM education programs supported by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity, international design events such as the Gwangju Design Biennale, environmentally responsible design research for nuclear power facilities, pedestrian space master planning, and youth entrepreneurship initiatives through the Seoul Campus Town project.

5. Global Engagement

Spatial Design at Ewha maintains active partnerships with leading international institutions such as Rhode Island School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Northern Arizona University.

Through student exchange programs, collaborative studios, and international design workshops, students gain global perspectives and engage with diverse approaches to spatial design.

6. The Future of Spatial Design

As the built environment becomes increasingly complex, the demand for innovative spatial designers continues to grow. Industries ranging from interior design and construction to technology and cultural production are seeking designers who can integrate sustainability, digital technologies, and human-centered thinking into spatial environments.

The Spatial Design program at Ewha prepares students to lead this transformation. Through a globally informed curriculum, rigorous studio education, and strong industry engagement, the program cultivates designers who redefine how people experience space in the twenty-first century.
