CURRICULUM
Year 1
As a foundational course in the Korean Painting program, this course aims to provide an understanding of the principles of Korean painting and the fundamental concepts of Eastern painting. Students will learn the use of traditional materials—paper, brush, and ink—and acquire basic expressive techniques centered on these mediums. Through this process, they will develop foundational artistic sensibilities and expressive skills while gaining an understanding of the characteristics and core principles of Eastern painting.
Year 2
Building on an understanding of fundamental materials and techniques, this course expands students’ exploration of diverse modes of expression and formal experimentation, fostering greater expressive depth and creativity. Through the process of applying and adapting the traditional techniques and principles of Eastern painting to their own practice, students are encouraged to develop their individual visual language. In addition, by analyzing artworks from various periods and disciplines, they broaden their understanding of the historical context and evolving currents of Korean and East Asian art.
Year 3
This course provides an in-depth study of the characteristics and techniques of traditional painting while fostering the ability to reinterpret and develop them in a contemporary context. Students refine their individual artistic direction and thematic focus, while exploring new pictorial techniques and formal approaches through creative expression and experimentation. By integrating theory and studio practice, the course also encourages a critical understanding of the significance and expressive potential of Korean and East Asian art within its historical and contemporary contexts.
Year 4
Building on a comprehensive understanding of Korean painting and advanced expressive skills, this course supports students in establishing an independent artistic practice. Through creative approaches to contemporary Korean painting grounded in tradition, students explore new possibilities in art and painting while undertaking advanced research and graduation projects. In addition, by developing an understanding of diverse art theories and historical trends, students cultivate a contemporary artistic perspective and the ability to proactively define and sustain their own artistic vision within modern society.
